Blackberry desktop manager keeps crashing windows 7

In your system tray, you should have an icon for the Blackberry Desktop Manager and another for the Blackberry Device Manager. If the device manager is not running, the Desktop manager will not recognize the device even though Windows will.

Yeah, it was running. I tried on the same make and model PC, but this one had Windows XP installed and it didn't work either. Installed on an older PC and everything is fine. Fun stuff! I only use DM to transfer 3rd party apps and settings from old phones to new, so having this old PC where it works is good enough for now.
