Although this area was in the slums of Brooklyn, over 40 people owned parcels of land. Ebbets began purchasing land in , 1, parcels in total, before having enough land to construct a ballpark in Construction on the ballpark began March 14, and Ebbets decided to name the ballpark after himself.
Completed in just over a year, the Brooklyn Dodgers played their first game at the ballpark on April 9, , a loss to Philadelphia. Ebbets Field had a capacity of 23, consisting of a covered double decked grandstand extending from the right field foul pole to homeplate and around to the third base side.
A lower level of seating continued down the third base side to the left field foul pole. The right field wall consisted of a nine foot wall. Once opening day arose a problem was discovered, there was no press box. A press box was placed in two rows of seats in the upper deck. One of the most iconic features of Ebbets Field was its exterior, consisting of brick and arches. As a result, the Dodgers ownership decided to build a massive publicly funded domed stadium. The problem was, the most powerful person in New York City, Rober Moses was opposed to this proposition.
Moses wanted the Dodgers to purchase Flushing Meadows the site of Citi Field today to build their new stadium. For ownership, the decision was an easy one: they decided to move to a city that welcomed them and the titan they had created. As a result, the Dodgers played their last game at Ebbets Field on September 24, , before moving to Los Angeles for the start of the new season.
Shortly thereafter, Ebbets Field was demolished by the city. This left a gaping hole in the hearts of Dodgers fans across the city, but nothing could be done. Critics cite this move as the change of the MLB from a fan-centric enterprise to one that focused on profits above all else. But New York City historians are quick to point out that Robert Moses had the power to keep the Dodgers in Brooklyn but ultimately chose not to.
Today, they are fondly remembered for their daring decision to desegregate baseball and for their decades-long dominance of Major League Baseball. Reading this as someone far too young to even remember the Dodgers in Brooklyn, this book made me feel transported in time and back to the neighborhood where I was sharing the same heartbreak as the Brooklyn diehards. One of the best baseball books I've ever read. Jul 25, Jeffrey rated it it was amazing. More from Noel Hynd Much like his book on the old Polo Grounds in New York this is full of remembrances of Ebbets Field in fact a number were duplicated from his previous book.
But as a kid growing up in the fifties In New York with the Yankees , Dodgers and Giants it was a wonderful time to be a baseball fan and Mr Hynd gently reminds us of this. Highly recommended. Mr Hynd is truly a man of the people by virtue of his social media presence keeping in touch with his fans. Aug 30, Maureen Tapio rated it it was amazing. The best baseball book I have read in years I have read them all. With MLB at literal nadir, this book reminded me of how much I love the game.
Our National Pastime. Apr 30, Mark Baier rated it liked it. For baseball fans Nice look back at a great era. Each chapter is devoted to a different player or event. This is not a book just about the closing of a baseball stadium but about an era in a city and a sport and its leading personalities. Quick enjoyable read.
Apr 15, Raymond Medrano rated it it was amazing. Memories This book brought many memories back to me. I am old enough to remember many of those players. I am from Detroit and it reminded me of the loss of Tiger Stadium. Mar 15, Len Knighton rated it liked it Shelves: sports. I was there for those last three games and remember especially the closing ceremonies after the last game.
Memorial Stadium was the original home of the Baltimore Ravens but finally was laid to rest, so to speak in I visited the grave site a few times and picked up some souvenirs of the ball park. Much of the storied history of Ebbets Field is chronicled here, the players, the personalities.
The first chapter covers the last game. The destruction of the ball park in is much of the focus of the final chapter. While it was wonderful reading about baseball before , I thought there was too much on other teams.
I was not expecting a definitive history of the Brooklyn Dodgers but I did expect more than I got. Three stars slightly waxing The stories in this book are the thing; earthy, trivia packed, evocative, meandering in the best possible way , off the beaten track, and deeply personal, but this self-published book by the author of the superb Giants of the Polo Grounds could have used an editor and a printing press that didn't leave the book looking like someone slapped it together a half hour before Kinko's closed.
I can't imagine my library ordering a book that looks as bootleg as this one does, which is a shame, since The The stories in this book are the thing; earthy, trivia packed, evocative, meandering in the best possible way , off the beaten track, and deeply personal, but this self-published book by the author of the superb Giants of the Polo Grounds could have used an editor and a printing press that didn't leave the book looking like someone slapped it together a half hour before Kinko's closed.
I can't imagine my library ordering a book that looks as bootleg as this one does, which is a shame, since The Final Game at Ebbets Field feels like a grandstand summer's day conversation to read.
